FANM, Congresswoman Fredericka Wilson to discuss newly implemented Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program

Oct 21, 2014

Added Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of FANM who co-led the nearly 5-year campaign with Steve Forester of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti : “We are grateful that the Obama administration finally heeded our repeated calls to reunite Haitian-Americans with their loved ones. Many are disappointed by the limited number of beneficiaries, but this is a positive step in the right direction. Efforts must now be focused on implementation in order to prevent further delays and undue sufferings.

Our bi-partisan South Florida delegation included Congresswomen Fredericka Wilson and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Congressmen Alcee Hastings, Joe Garcia, Mario Diaz-Balart and our two Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio. Their responsible, collective leadership sidestepped petty politics and brought this important measure to fruition.  Haitian-American stakeholders,   faith leaders including Archbishop Tomas Wenski, Father Reginald Jean-Mary , Monsignor Fritz Bazin ; civic and human rights organizations such as NAACP and BIN (Black Immigration Network) came together in support of this program, an example worth replicating with other campaigns.  The Miami Herald led the media support with several editorials and articles in addition to creating spaces for community voices to be heard.
